Standalone controllers
Standalone is by far the simplest way to secure your premises and typically for use with no more than 20 users, they controllers can accept a majority of our recommended access control readers, code, magstrip and proximity.
They are cost effective and have simple card administration with an easy method of enrolling a complete pack of cards, typically a Paxton Switch 2 ( standalone) uses a pack of user cards and shadow card.
- Enrol the entire pack using the enrolment card
- Issue the cards and make a note of who had which card and right their name on the shadow card. (user takes card and you keep the shadow card)
- If a user has lost a card or leaves, you simply present their shadow card to the reader and he or she are removed from the system.
- If they find the card it can be added back on using the enrolment card and the now found card.
You can also adjust the delay of opening times with a “door opening time” card
They can also offer a maximum of 3 different access levels with a very simple colour arrangement.
The diagram shows a leisure centre with three areas secured using different access permissions. Different types of users are issued green, amber or red tokens for simple management.
As mentioned, they are very simple to use but just bear in mind each door would need to be updated with the shadow card or enrolment card, so if you had 10+ doors you might want to think about a Net2 or networked access control system.
Members – access to just the courts

Networked - A networked access control system
Referred to as ‘PC based’ or ‘Networked’ access control, these systems may be used to control one or many doors in a building across a WAN or LAN utilising IP and Network Infrastructure making it scalable and versatile.
Allowing up control of sites of up to 1000 doors and 50,000 users.
The Door Controllers have all the features of a standalone controller with an added IP Interface which adds more flexibility using more transmission methods, but more importantly a simple manageable system for the ease of use from a Desktop PC Client or Mobile App
The Access Control is managed by straightforward & intuitive software allowing you to easily setup multiple users across multiple access groups, the software allows you to “bar” or remove a user which is instantly sent to online door controllers, for
For example, a user has lost his card:
- Search and find the user
- Click Token and “Lost Token”
- Apply
The result – all the connected door controller will now prevent this card from access – Its that simple !
The Controller will accept a wide range of readers and have and extra reader input for use with clock in time and attendance, in the event of software or server failure the controller will operate in standalone mode and use the last database information received, they will also log entry and events and update the server when re-connected.
